Rainwater Harvesting Benefits & How To Get The Best From Your System
To use your rainwater around the home and garden, the water must:
- Be collected from a roof (except green roofs), ground water is too dirty
- Be filtered for debris, a good, pre-installed filter should be used in your tank
- Be stored at a low, stable temperature (underground)
- Be free from light to stop algae growth (underground)
- Be controlled upon entry to the tank, a calmed inlet prevents disturbance of sediment
- Be stored in a smooth tank, rough surfaces and joins can breed bacteria
- Be filtered prior to the pump, 0.5mm is fine enough to stop particles
- Be used straight from your underground tank. Storing untreated water in a warm loft can reduce quality
What can I use rainwater for?
If the above criteria are met, then you can use the water for toilet flushing, washing clothes, watering the garden and washing the car - reducing your mains water consumption by up to 50%!
